How To Record Your Desktop Screen Using VLC Player

VLC Media Player, the multi-purpose video player, has another trick in its sleeve. It can record your screen without the need for any additional software.

This is how it works

How to Use VLC to Record Your Screen

  1. Launch the VLC Media Player.
  2. On the toolbar, click the Media tab and then Convert/Save.
  3. Navigate to the Capture Devices tab. Change the Capture mode option box here to Desktop.
  4. In the desired frame rate box, enter the number of frames per second. 15 frames per second should plenty for simple screen recordings. If you require a high-quality recording, consider 30FPS. A greater frame rate results in a smoother recording but a bigger file size.
  5. To access the next dialog box, click the Convert/Save button.
  6. Choose a location to save the recording by selecting Browse next to the Destination file box.
  7. Click Start once you’ve done this to start the recording. VLC will record everything on the screen, with no indication that it’s doing so.
  8. To terminate the recording, click the Stop button on the VLC interface, and the file will be saved automatically. It will be ready for you in MP4 format at the place you indicated before.
